Stetson University Director of Athletics Jeff Altier announced today the signing of Hatters football coach Roger Hughes to a contract extension. The new deal will keep Hughes on the Stetson sideline through the 2018 season.

The new extension has additional incentives that, when met, will extend the contract two more years, through 2020.

“When we decided to bring football back to Stetson University in 2011, there was no question Roger Hughes was the right choice to build the program from the ground up,” Altier said. “After three years of play on the field, I am as confident as ever in Coach Hughes and his ability to lead this program into the future.

“Coach Hughes has demonstrated a commitment to the Mission of the Stetson Athletic department by recruiting and developing student-athletes, coaches and staff, creating a culture of champions within and outside of competition. I am confident that during the next three years the athletic success of the Stetson Football program will soar as Coach Hughes fully incorporates the Department’s Core Values.”

Hughes said he is pleased in the confidence both Altier and University President Dr. Wendy Libby have shown in him and the trust they have placed in his to lead the Stetson football program into the future.

“Any time you get renewed it signals they are pleased with the job you are doing,” Hughes said. “It shows that the vision and direction of the program is congruent with what the president and athletic director want. I don’t think there are any illusions that, while we have made progress in a lot of areas, the expectations for the program start to change. The expectations are no different than what we have had for ourselves all along.”

While Hughes said the job security is nice, the most important part of the extension is the security it provides for his staff, and the confidence it gives to the young men who make up the program.

“This allows nine other families to have some security going forward,” Hughes said. “I am also looking forward to taking the next step toward making us a program to be reckoned with inside the Pioneer Football League.”

While the initial extension was important to get done, the possibility of adding years to the agreement based on the performance of the program is something that Hughes is excited about.

“I have always felt that incentive based clauses match fair pay for fair performance,” Hughes said. “There is a great incentive for us as coaches and staff to know there is a reward if we achieve what we need to achieve. More importantly, it puts a stamp of approval on the culture and direction of the program. In one hand, I am happy with the pat on the back but, on the other hand, we know the job is not finished and we need to continue to progress in order to realize the full potential of the contract.

“It is nice to know the university is willing to match rewards to performance. It is also nice that they were able to provide incentives that are achievable. They were realistic in setting expectations for a program that is in its infancy and clawing its way toward significance.”

The 2016 Stetson football team will open with three consecutive home games in September at Spec Martin Memorial Stadium. Online ticket sales for new season tickets and mini plans will begin for the 2016 season on July 5. Single-game tickets will be available in August.
